Pawsome News, Fur-Friends! 🐾
In 2024, the humans on the Parks Advisory Commission (PAC) worked hard to ensure our dog beach stays a happy, wag-worthy place! Here’s what happened:
- Spring Check-In: The City Manager asked PAC members and the Police Department to observe the dog beach and make sure the 2023 improvements were working.
- Summer Observations: PAC members noticed the beach was clean, dogs were mostly under control (even off-leash!), and the buoys and fences kept everyone in the right spots. No serious barking or doggy disagreements were spotted!
- Water Quality Wins: Testing showed our beach water stayed safe all summer, with no closures needed. The water issues at Memorial Beach seemed to come from birds, not pups.
After all that, the PAC concluded the dog beach is a pawsitively amazing community spot. They recommended:
- Leash-Free Fun: Remove leash rules at the beach to match City Code.
- Better Signs: Add clear markers for entering and leaving the dog beach.
- Extra Helpers: Seasonal officers to educate humans and enforce rules.
- More Splash Room: Extend the buoys for a bigger doggy play zone.
The PAC presented these ideas to the City Council in November 2024, and the Council plans to hold a public hearing on February 25, 2025, to make final decisions.
